In this thought-provoking episode, I interview psychiatrist Xiaojue Hu about the complexities of interracial dating and how to navigate them. We discuss:
- How stereotypes show up and how to get beyond them
- How race and cultural differences can complicate relationships and how to talk about them
- What to say if you realize your date is making an assumption about you
- How to be curious and authentic in the face of cultural differences
We admit that we are not experts on this subject, and this episode is meant to open the door to deeper discussion. We invite people to share in the comments: what stereotypes have you experienced in interracial dating and how have you addressed them?
Xiaojue Hu got her medical degree at brown university and trained at NYU for Psychiatry residency and fellowship and now she practices at a community clinic affiliated with NYU in NYC serving a diverse, under-served community. She’s also the leading psychiatrist of the Asian Bicultural Clinic there, where she sees many Asian and Asian American immigrants. She focuses on cultural psychiatry, specifically the role of culture in mental health.
